August FFN update: Canteen & Pumpkin Day
To catch you up on Canteen (the communal eating project as part of the FFN’s Future Shed 2024 residency programme), we officially have what should be a venue, since Badgers Hill didn’t quite work out.
That venue is Trinity Hall, on the Welshmill / Selwood Road side of town. There was a lot of umming and ahing over whether the Assembly Rooms might also serve as a venue for one of the Autumn pop-ups, as there was the potential to test whether the concept worked during a lunchtime or not.
Ultimately though, Trinity Hall can be hired by community ventures for less than half the price of the Assembly Rooms. The willingness to support an idea by the community and for the community simply felt like a much better fit, even if there might be one or two challenges with the space.
In short, details for the Canteen pop-ups, which will inform a blueprint for a communal eating project in Frome, are thus:
Evenings of Friday 25th October and 15th November

Further Canteen planning
With all meeting dates now re-scheduled, the next general planning meeting for Canteen is earmarked for Wednesday the 25th September, with another on the 9th October.
Also upcoming are one or two marketing and menu planning meets. Those of you who’ve already offered help on the food prep side (paid or volunteer), you know who you are. If there are any more cooks or chefs interested in helping shape the food offering (even if it’s not ultimately to cook it), do make yourself known.
Join in on Frome’s “fantastic seasonal harvest hodgepodge”
Caroline of Frome Field 2 Fork is sending out invites to trade or exhibit at what will be the third iteration of Frome’s Pumpkin Day – a harvest swap and mini food festival taking place on the 2nd November at the Cheese & Grain.
Whether you’re a food producer, charity, or relevant community venture, Pumpkin Day is a good way to sell some produce and/or put yourself in front of local food-curious people. Last year, Vallis Farm, Frome Wholefoods, Mere Trout, Moonacre, Purple Elephant, Frome Seed Library, and Dowdings were among those who’d set up to trade or share info.
Caroline’s also looking for ideas or for workshops revolving around seasonal food, if you fancy hosting your own.
